Keynote

A Clinician Among Us: Applying Mental Health Theoretical Frameworks to Enhance DEIB work in Higher Education

Presenter: Ahyana King, MS LPC

As a trained and experienced licensed professional counselor who has primarily served as a student engagement professional leading diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) offices at colleges across the United States, Ahyana King has witnessed the efficacy of integrating core tenants of human ecological and humanistic counseling theories into her DEIB work. Core components of these theories have been instrumental in managing conflict, understanding the scope of an issue, advocating for resources, building competencies, and of significant note-building relationships across cultures, campus, and local communities- ultimately facilitating and sustaining change.

Ahyana will share how DEIB work can be enhanced when we invite a holistically contextualized approach, wisely steward the wealth of knowledge among our campus community members, and approach DEIB work concurrently on micro and macro levels to create and sustain campus cultures that truly offer diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. She will share personal case examples of the benefits of implementation of these models in her DEIB work as a few key strategies that can truly be implemented in any office on campus and more effectively across offices.

Sessions

Workshop led by keynote speaker Ayhana King “Keynote Continued- Making It Practical and Personal”

Presenter: Ahyana King, MS LPC

This workshop will be an opportunity to take the theory and big picture strategy shared in the keynote and translate it into personalized application. Participants will apply one of the theoretical frameworks to propose a micro- or macro-level strategy for addressing a challenge they are navigating on their institution’s campus. Ms. King will guide individuals in activities that include reflective work, small group work using prompts and handouts, and then large group discussion.

Stories of Space and Student Sense of Belonging

Presenter: Benjamin Rieth, Bellin College

A student's sense of belonging can affect many aspects of their achievements and their academic and social lives (Freeman et al., 2007; Hausman et al., 2007; Hoffman et al., 2002; Strayhorn, 2012). Vaccaro and Newman (2022) contended only by understanding the process of belonging development can students develop a sense of being as they navigate welcoming and unwelcoming campus environments, engage in involvement in curricular and extra-curricular activities, develop relationships with peers and faculty, and achieve academic success and mastery of the student role. I have created a theory called the Five Rs: Space and Student Sense of Belonging, which provides higher education professionals a framework for how to foster student sense of belonging through the intentional use of space. During this session we will dive into this theory together and discuss the spaces around us that our students inhabit.

Discussing Black Excellence: A Glimpse at Black Student Success in College

Presenter: Victoria “Tori” McNeal, St. Norbert College

Uniquely Mentored: The Artisanal Approach to Building Executive Leadership Skills

Presenter: Dr. Marlene De La Cruz-Guzman, Viterbo University

Mentoring today is the custom-tailored approach to building the essential executive leadership skills every higher education professional needs to succeed. No longer an old-fashioned “being told what to do” paradigm, mentoring today is tailored to the mentee’s needs, availability, skill set, and aspirations. With a fully relational and two-way paradigm of growth, mentoring has developed into a mutually beneficial professional relationship, which enriches participants’ experiences in the workplace and encourages them to understand the higher education landscape from a variety of perspectives, based on identities, lived experiences, theoretical standpoints, and their own strengths and growing edges. This interactive session will help you to explore the benefits of a new model of mentorship today.

Sustained Dialogue: Listening for a Change!

Presenter: Dr. Cecil Youngblood, Beloit College

Sustained Dialogue is a process and a practice not a program. We will briefly introduce Sustained Dialogue's 5-stage dialogue to action process.  Learn dialogue and leadership skills necessary to communicate and transform relationships that lead to positive successful change.
