Holy Family College held the College’s third annual “HFC Serves” day of service on February 6. Approximately 120 individuals, including faculty, staff, and students, participated in volunteer opportunities in Manitowoc County.
The day began with a welcome by Dr. Robert B. Callahan, College president, and was followed by a prayer by student Jenny Hill. The send-off concluded with a blessing by the Rev. David Beaudry, College chaplain.
“We are grateful as a College community to have the opportunity to participate in service opportunities in the Manitowoc area with our faculty, staff and students,” said Callahan. “As an institution, we live by the values of community, compassion, peacemaking, and reverence for creation. ‘HFC Serves’ is one example of how Holy Family College practices these values and instills the importance of servant leadership in our students.”
The College community went to 16 nonprofit service sites throughout Manitowoc County to conduct volunteer work followed by lunch with coordinators at each location.
Following the service hours, Harry F. Sydney III, a former NFL football player, coach, and three-time Super Bowl Champion spoke on campus.
Sydney also is president and founder of “My Brother’s Keeper.” To date, he has touched the lives of many people with his faith and courageous story of how he pursued his dream to become a professional football player despite adversity. He is dedicated to seeing people become unstoppable through his speaking engagements, mentoring program, and publication of his life story.
He played professional football in the USFL, CFL, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Green Bay Packers. Sydney was with the San Francisco 49ers from 1987-1991 where he earned two Super Bowl rings. His last season as a player was in 1992 with the Green Bay Packers.
